International educators should be engaging with their key audiences on the platforms they are using, and it’s becoming more and more evident that Instagram is one of those platforms. Whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve been on Instagram for some time, here are our top 7 tips for using Instagram to your advantage:
Tip #1: Pick a Time to Post and Stick With It
Many brands decide to post to Instagram every day at a similar time. For optimal results, it’s best to post around average mealtimes. When you think about it, that’s usually when people are browsing their phones. If you’re new to posting, this is also a good way to make sure you actually post on a daily basis.
Tip #2: Master The Hashtags
Using hashtags is known to increase likes, and you can use up to 30 per post.
Pro Tip: Hashtags have a reputation for appearing cluttered, and at times spammy. If you choose to use several, put them in the 1st comment on your post.

If you like me, I’ll like you! Engage with your audience and they are more likely to engage with you.
Tip #4: Run a Contest
An Instagram contest is a great way to drum up excitement and get people talking about your brand. There are different types of contests you can run, and they are all fairly easy to do. The most popular is a “random” drawing style – ask your followers to a) follow you on Instagram, b) post a photo/video following a theme you stipulate, and c) use your specific hashtag (like #GoAbroadCom).
Tip #5: Build Awareness of Your Instagram Handle
Even though this is fairly obvious and straightforward, it’s still worth mentioning. The first step in Instagram marketing is to promote your handle to your customers. Add the Instagram icon to your website; promote your channel on Facebook, Twitter, and other networks, and actively ask your audience to follow you.
Tip #6: Try a Repost App
These are all the rage. Repost or “regram” applications allow you to easily repost user generated content to keep your content varied and consistent. Most apps automatically give credit to the original author of the post, and it will quote their caption and hashtags.
Tip #7: Connect Your Other Social Accounts
Within the app, you’re prompted to post your Instagram photos and videos to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, and Foursquare. Promoting your Instagram posts on Twitter and Facebook in particular is a great way to grow your presence while getting engagement on all three channels.
